OTOH, the OP reports that a USB-C connection to a Retina MacBook Pro works. You'd want something better than that for video ideally, a cable that could carry a UHD/4K video signal. There are cables that are designed for charging smartphones or tablets but that are only advertised as being able to carry data at USB 2.0 speeds. The type of USB-C cable could make a difference. Otherwise just wait for the topic to get sorted out by Apple - surely one of the top priority tasks on their list. In case you want a one wire connection get one of those TB3 docking stations - they'll probably work fine also at this point in time. The Display problem is a topic that seems to affect certain combinations with USB-C displays but not with Thunderbolt connected displays. My suggestion is to wait until mid 2021 for a switch to the new M1 machines. It has tremendous potential and the speed gain is enormous but I'd not use it for mission critical work as of today. Wait for macOS 11.1.1 or 11.2 to fix that and check the cables you're using - not all cable support the same connection type.Īs elaborated before macOS 11 on M1 machines is not yet production grade environment IMHIO. Not sure if I am missing anything using it with HDMI, but I would rather do the usb-c connection.

Finally he said I needed to update to OS 11.1 and that should fix it. I spent 45 min with Apple and the guy read everything he could find. It works fine with HDMI and it works with the MacBook Pro with usb-c ports.
